Cutting Formica with Skill/Circular Saw

May 30th, 2009 No comments

When you are installing cabinets that have plastic laminate on them, the process of cutting the Formica, when scribing to fit, can be done with a skill saw. The trick to this is using the circular saw in a reverse motion when making the cut on the finished side. What I mean is that rather than pushing the circular saw forward so that the rotation of the blade is pulling the finish side of the laminate up and causing it to chip, you kerf the laminate running the skill saw in a reverse motion. The first pass of this saw kerf should only be about an eight of an inch deep. Make sure that you practice this technique several times on a scrap piece of wood before actually doing it on the cabinet. Use the following steps as a guide. read Cutting Formica with A Circular/Skill Saw

Painting Cabinet Doors Lacquer-How many coats are needed?

May 29th, 2009 2 comments

We have always used lacquer based paint on raw maple doors, and on occasion, when painting Thermofoil doors we have used the same method. The number of coats will depend on how many flaws are on the doors. We are always able to get a nice looking satin finish by applying five coats on each side. Yes, I said five. If you decide to paint Thermofoil doors, check with your local cabinetry supply company to get the proper primers and top coat. read Painting Cabinet Doors with Lacquer

The standard distance that cabinets should be installed away from where there is a doorway is 4”. Using this measurement will allow enough room for door casing to be put around the opening. Can Drywall Screws be Used for Installing Cabinets?

May 27th, 2009 No comments

Although it’s not recommended, drywall screws will work for installing cabinets. You just have to make sure that you pre-drill a pilot hole in the cabinet part that you are attaching to either the wall or another cabinet. If you don’t create a pilot hole, there is a good possibility that when the screw is sinking it can snap off. These screws do not have a high sheer strength. read Can Drywall Screws be Used for Cabinet Installation
