Cabinet Woodworking Plans

February 9th, 2011 No comments

Every craftsman starts with a detailed print of his project to be built. The fine art of cabinet woodworking requires plans that give accurate details. Something I learned early on in my cupboard fabricating carrier is that everything that is on the blueprints must be triple checked. Many say measure twice and cut once. I say study your plans and review all of the dimensions several times before you order materials or turn on any woodworking equipment.

Making mistakes can be very costly. Never get in a hurry. There’s an old saying that goes like this: “haste makes waste.” Stick to the plans and workout all of the details to precision accuracy.  If you do this  your final product will be beautiful.

Ideas for Building Bathroom Cabinets Over the Toilet

December 15th, 2010 No comments

You could buy a nice bathroom cabinet to go over the stool, but it most likely won’t match your existing cupboards. Over the toilet cabinets can be custom made to match what you already have. One of the problems you may encounter is that if you have special order doors on your vanities, you may have difficulty finding an exact match.

In this article, I’m going to give a few suggestions that can help you with this project.

What size should the cabinet over the toilet be?

We generally make them about thirty inches high and no deeper than eight and a half inches (8-1/2″), over all. The width can be whatever you decide. Most toilets are in the neighborhood of twenty (20″) to twenty four inches (24″) wide. Keeping in sync with the symmetry of the stool makes for a good design.

WARNING Do Not Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets

December 3rd, 2010 No comments

Rather than trying to build a set of custom made kitchen cabinets, consider getting cupboards from Home Depot instead. Why would I say that? Well, I’ve been fabricating kitchens for many years and unless you really know what you are doing, heed my WARNING, this is not a cakewalk of a job to undertake.

There are tricks in every trade and this industry is full of them. For instance, you are going to need to account for many things in your design. What kind of floor will you have? How thick is the flooring going to be? How big is a dishwasher opening size supposed to be? Can you align the sink dead center with the window. How big should walkways be around island base cabinets? What’s the standard height that uppers get installed? How much room is required for an over the range microwave?

The list of specifications goes on and on.

In the video below you can get an idea of the amount of space you will need and some of the tools required for making cupboards. At minimum, you are going to need all of the space that a two car garage will provide for fabricating the parts you are going to need. read Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets
