How to Cut Formica to Fit Curved Walls

May 24th, 2010 No comments

If you are gluing laminate along walls that are not straight this is normal. You must take the time to cut the plastic laminate Formica to fit the inconsistencies of the curves on the walls. It is a very rare case for the drywall to be straight. Make sure to allot plenty of time to do the job correctly. NO RUSH JOBS ALLOWED HERE!

The method taught in this video for scribing a plastic laminate countertop backsplash cap to fit tightly to the walls can be used for every area of kitchen or bathroom vanity cupboard lamination work.

What I mean is, if your vanity or kitchen cabinet side has a void area where the mica meets the wall, when you are resurfacing, just use the same method to make it fit to the crooked wall. The same applies to floors that are not level and walls that are not plumb.

Cutting Formica Plastic Laminate

May 24th, 2010 No comments

Available at klenktools.com

This video demonstrates the use of hand cutters. You can buy these at a hardware store. Cutting Formica with these tin snips is an acceptable method commonly used in the cabinet industry. The scissors are utilized more for fitting plastic laminate on kitchen resurfacing jobs more than any other type of laminate work in the industry.

Kitchen and bathroom vanity cabinet and countertop installers have used these cutters for decades to sever the plastic while on the job site.

You can find Formica cutting hand tools that are a lot more expensive and do not cut as efficiently as a good old pair of tin snips from Home Depot or Lowe’s. These specially designed scissors are designed to cut “clean” cut both the left and right edge of the cut. Although the look impressive and come with a hefty price tag the tin snip style cutters work better than these over priced laminate shears.

Routing Formica Plastic Laminate

May 22nd, 2010 4 comments

What is the proper direction that a router must go when routing (or cutting) off Formica cabinet or countertop plastic laminate? The correct way of trimming the plastic depends upon what you are cutting. Inside and outside cuts are accomplished differently.

I watched a video on Youtube the other day, actually two of them, where the instructors were pushing the router in the wrong direction while cutting the Formica off of a cabinet and a countertop. Their misuse of the tool inspired me to create a video teaching professional cabinet maker’s methods of trimming laminate.

Easy to Install File Drawer Cabinet Hanging Rails

May 22nd, 2010 9 comments

How hard is it to install a file rail system. The hanging support bars are easy to fasten in place. Some product parts clip onto the wood cabinet drawers and others get screwed into position. Another style is made out of metal frame that just rests inside the space. The rods are designed to support Pendaflex brand folders. There are also plastic slip on rails available for purchase through various hardware supply companies online.

Not all wood drawers will be able to store legal size documents. The most common size cabinet in office supply stores seem to be designed for letter size file hanging bar style organizers. If your drawers are not the right dimensions there’s not much that can be done to make the larger size accessories work.

The first thing you need to do is measure the inside dimensions of your drawer. This will basically determine what file drawer accessories will be easy to install. Most parts are available in office supply stores or through an online supplier.

What are the two different File Folder Sizes

The legal file folder size is fourteen and three quarter inches (14-3/4”). The letter size is only eleven and three quarters of an inch (11-3/4”).

Adjustable Metal Frame Type Rack

If you have ever seen the metal frame styles, these are rather simple to assemble and they just set in the bottom of the drawer. Most of the frame depths are in the eighteen inch range because most desk cabinets are around twenty inches deep. The biggest drawback to these hanging file drawer bars is that they are supported by the bottom of the drawer. Many office cabinets that get purchased from retail stores have thin, flimsy materials in the bottom of the drawers that are not really strong enough to support the weight associated with hanging files.
