Cabinet or Countertop Plastic Laminate Sizes

Kitchen fabricators have several  width and length sizes of plastic laminate sheets to choose from and two different thicknesses that are available. Local distributors keep Formica products on hand and in-stock colors are generally shipped or delivered the next day after the order is placed. Manufactures have plants scattered abroad that supply smaller chains with these various mica sizes.

These companies all provide the two most popular thicknesses of mica that are used in the cabinet and countertop making industries in the United States. One is referred to as VT and the other is STD.

What does VT thickness plastic laminate mean?

This is generally the Formica that is used on most of the exterior cabinetry parts but should never be used on the countertops. The thickness of VT laminate is 1/32 of an inch. Most of the exterior-exposed finished areas such as the face frame, ends (or “sides”), doors, finished cabinetry tops, and upper- bottoms get an application of VT which is adhered with contact cement.

What is STD Thickness?

All countertops that are fabricated out of plastic laminate should have been done so with Standard (or “STD”) thickness mica. It is 1/16 of an inch thick and more durable than the vertical grade (VT) that is glued onto the cabinets.

What plastic laminate sheet sizes are available for making cabinets?

In terms of width and length the basic size for a VT thickness sheet, which is applied to the cupboard parts, is 48” x 96” or termed as a four foot by eight foot sheet. Many manufactures make their gloss Formica sizes only available in 48” x 120” or four by ten foot sheets.

  • Tip: If you’re using gloss laminate always order it with a peel coat.

What sheet sizes are available for manufacturing (or “making”) countertops?

There are a larger variety of sizes to choose from when you are building countertops with the STD thickness mica. Most of the manufactures produce these selections, but they are not always in stock for next day delivery with the local distributors.

Some local distributors will cut a longer piece of STD plastic laminate to a smaller size if you only need a six foot piece. This is not always the case but it never hurts to ask.

If you only need a small piece of Formica, check with a local cabinetry manufacture. You can usually get them to cut various sizes of mica for you if they have the color in stock. Remember to always use VT or vertical thickness on cabinet parts and STD or standard thickness plastic laminate on countertops.
